Johnstown Community YMCA Project Updates

08-10-2019

Anticipation filled the site of the Johnstown Community YMCA on August 10 as hundreds of residents gathered for its Topping Ceremony, an important milestone event celebrating the placement of the last piece of steel on the building. Everyone was encouraged to sign the beam that will be displayed above the lobby of the new Y, permanently displaying it covered in signatures.

In addition to the beam signing, the event also featured guided tours of the building by Adolfson & Peterson Construction; bounce houses, kid-friendly activities and program information provided by YMCA of Northern Colorado; and food and refreshments by H&E Equipment Services. Arapahoe Rental donated the canopies, tables and chairs for the event.

The 69,000-square-foot Johnstown Community YMCA is still on track for completion in May 2020, and on budget, according to Project Manager Beau LaCouture. Crews have faced constant weather-related challenges but have still managed to complete most of the site grading; foundations; rammed aggregate piers; underground utilities; storm sewer; concrete floors; underground electrical; plumbing; and 90 percent of the structural masonry walls.

Over the next few months, the contractor will install structural steel; electrical and mechanical systems; underground plumbing at both pools; pool deck; exterior masonry façade; landscaping at multipurpose field; and flatwork at the parking lot.

In the meantime, the YMCA of Northern Colorado’s summer camp offerings are in full swing! The YMCA Camp Noco (traditional day camp for grades K-6th), Achievers Camp (summer enrichment for grades K-5th) and Teen Camp (fun and field trips for grades 6th-9th) are fun-focused day camps that run all summer long at Pioneer Ridge Elementary. Registration is ongoing at www.ymcanoco.org/summer-camps/day-camps/johnstown-milliken-camps. In fall, the Y will begin offering youth sports programs in the Johnstown/Milliken area. Stay tuned for details. Financial assistance is offered for families, individuals and children in need. Learn more at www.ymcanoco.org/membership/financial-assistance.

The Johnstown Community YMCA construction site is rapidly transforming into the 69,000-square-foot fitness and recreation center the Town looks forward to opening in May 2020. Despite some setbacks from difficult winter weather, progress is still well underway. So far, site grading, foundations, rammed aggregate piers, underground utilities, and the storm sewer have all been installed.

This spring and summer, residents can look forward to the building going vertical! Concrete slabs will be poured; structural steel and masonry walls will go up; electrical and plumbing will be installed on the building and pool; and the Xcel transformer will be set.

The YMCA of Northern Colorado will begin offering youth programs in the Johnstown/Milliken area this summer. While details are being finalized, the Y is working with the school district to develop summer programming at Pioneer Ridge Elementary and Milliken Elementary for children entering K-5th and at Milliken Middle School for children entering 6th-8th. The Y will offer six-week summer learning programs with pre- and post-camp care, as well as summer camp on weeks when the learning program is not in session. The Y also plans to run youth sports programs in fall. Visit www.ymcanoco.org/johnstown-camp to request email updates.

Johnstown, Colo., Nov. 1, 2018 – The Town of Johnstown invites all local families to attend and participate in Northern Colorado’s largest groundbreaking of the Johnstown Community YMCA on Saturday, Nov. 10 starting at 10 a.m. at Johnstown Town Hall, 450 S. Parish Ave., Johnstown, CO 80534.

All kids from Johnstown are encouraged to bring their own shovels and join leaders from the Town of Johnstown, the YMCA of Northern Colorado, builders Adolfson & Peterson Construction, architecture firm Perkins+Will, and other key stakeholders, to physically break ground on the construction site of this $34 million-dollar, 69,000-square-foot fitness and community center. The Johnstown Community YMCA, which is slated to open in May of 2020, will be built on the property across from Town Hall, the Police Department and the Library.

“The good citizens of Johnstown have waited a long time for a facility like this, and they deserve to be a part of its memorable celebration,” said Johnstown Mayor Scott James. “The Johnstown Community YMCA is all about kids and families, so we invite them ALL to bring their own shovel on Saturday and help us get started!”

“Town Council and staff have been diligent in saving and planning for this facility, and I am thrilled we are able to build it without increasing debt or taxes,” James continued. “I could not be prouder of the design, construction and operational partners we have chosen, and I know we will build a world-class rec-center our citizens can be proud of and enjoy for generations to come.”

This state-of-the-art facility will include a fitness center, a preschool, an aquatics center, community event spaces, sports fields, multipurpose rooms, and much more. The YMCA will bring to the area fitness and wellness resources, classes and programs; swim lessons and aquatics programs; youth sports; preschool, summer camps, before- and after-school care, as well as other youth programs.
